The Real Companhia Velha was established on September 10, 1756 in Porto. The company is also known as the Royal Oporto Wine Company, as it was founded by King Dom Jose I. The port wine house produces distinguished blended tawny port wines from the harvest of old vines from the vineyards of Quinta das Carvalha. Quinta das Carvalhas is located on the left bank of the Douro River and the history of the wine estate dates back to 1759. The company is still Portuguese owned (not under British administration) and is run by Silva Reis. Port wine is produced on the granite terraces of the Douro River and is named after the city of Porto (Oporto).
