The Real Companhia Velha was established on September 10, 1756 in Porto. The company is also known as the Royal Oporto Wine Company because it was founded by King Dom Jose I. This port winery with a long history is currently the largest and most famous in Portugal. The company is still owned by the Portuguese (it is not under British administration) and the company is managed by Silva Reis. Port wine is produced on the granite terraces of the Douro River and is named after the city of Porto (Oporto).
