A small winery in the town of Blenheim, founded in 1978, owned by the Ibbotson family, who bought the land from the retired British mayor of Blenheim, Sir James Sinclair, naming the winery Saint Clair in his honor. Today, he owns vineyards in several different New Zealand wine regions, both in the North and South Island. Deep garnet red of medium intensity. The aroma is berry elegant. There are ripe dark stone fruits, cherry marmalade, ripe dark wild berries, blueberries and wild berries with incense smoke and slightly animalic understory notes. The taste is medium-bodied, dry and velvety berry. Feel overripe black forest berries and dark stone fruits. The aftertaste is long, with smoky-spicy berries and silky tannins. The grapes are picked from the warmer Omaka Valley, 'Twin Hill' section of the Marlborough growing area. Some of the wine is fermented as whole bunches. The wine is fermented in stainless steel barrels, the wine develops for 11 months in small French oak barrels, 30% of which are new.
