Having studied winemaking in exile in France, he brought modern winemaking techniques to the Vinho Verde region, starting to use the traditional method in the production of sparkling wines and, inspired by the practices of the Cognac region, began developing grape distillates in French oak barrels. Quinta da Calçada was also the first wine producer in the Vinho Verde region to start exporting its wines. Today, the estate, together with 50ha of vineyards and the Casa da Calçada luxury hotel, belongs to the Mota family.
