The Bierzo appellation, close to the Galician county border, is the new-kid-on-the-block of one of Spain's most successful red wine regions, Castilla y Leon, which includes the legendary Ribera del Duero, Toro and Cigales wine regions, each hotter than the other. Bierzo's signature berry, Mencia, is a rising trend in the world's wine arenas. Cuatro Pasos Black puts it all on the line here. The berries, carefully selected from 80-year-old healthy vines on the higher slopes of the El Bierzo mountains, are well concentrated and the juice pressed from them is like "black gold", which is appreciated for 9 months in small 225L French oak barrels. The result is a dense, fleshy, berry-laden (including morello cherry and black plum), full-bodied, but not heavyweight champion-type wine. There is zest and spice and myrtle, but in an elegant way. Contains sulfites.
