Vieux Pineau des Charentes is made with 50% Colombard and 50% Ugni-Blanc grapes from the gardens of the Chateau de Montifaud family. Pineau was made by mixing 3/4 of fresh grape juice and 1/4 of 70% cognac that had previously matured for no more than one year. Later, the mixture matured for at least 5 years in French oak casks according to the rules of the local appellation, so that the product could be labeled Vieux Pineau des Charentes on the bottle. Ugni-Blanc gives the product finesse and a bit of acidity. Colombard adds fruity notes. Together, they add up to a great balance.
