In 2000, Sorrento was recognized by the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication (P.G.T.) to guarantee the authenticity of the product. Villa Massa was founded in 1991 by brothers Sergio & Stefano Massa. It is the first family company that produces, markets and sells authentic lemon liqueur and amaretto from Sorrento. Limoncello is believed to have originally come from southern Italy. It is produced especially in the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast.
