In 1961, Jørgen Ketil started working with Danish bitters at Asmund Danske Spritfabrikker in Roskilde. It was the time when many Danes began to spend their vacations in southern Europe, where they also discovered bitter bitters. Over three years, Asmund tested more than 300 ingredients and more than 600 combinations with working groups and extensive taste panels. By 1964, Asmund had achieved his goal and confirmed the recipe for "smooth yet bitter schnapps". Gammel Dansk is made from 29 herbs and spices. The exact recipe is a well-kept secret. However, it is said that rowan berries, anise, ginger and wormwood contribute to the unique taste.
